Wood Base measures 2.75" L x 2.3" W Hussars (Husaria in Polish) during the 16th-18th centuries were cavalrymen who fought on horseback as primary part of the Polish Army; first developed as a formation of light calvary, then later transformed into heavy calvary. They have been described as 'one of the most spectacular soldiers in the world'. Up until the 18th century, the Polish Hussars were notoriously the elite unit of the Commonwealth. A Hussar's assignment was to crush the position of enemy's infantry. A hussar was armed in Polish construction: a sabre, a lance, two pistols, often a huge range reflective bow, and a so called kalkan shield. Their famous wings at first were attached to a saddle in order to protect the rider from the Tatar arcane. However they were later pinned on to the hussar back to served as a decoration and psychological attribute to scare the enemy and their horses' (huge noises were created when a hussar regiment was charging in full gallop).
