Poland: A Novel
by James A. Michener
Like the heroic land that is its subject, James Michener's Poland teems with vivid events and unforgettable characters in the sweeping span of eight tumultuous centuries. In a tradition of resistance to barbarian Tatar invaders and brutal Nazi occupiers, with a heritage of pride that burns through eras of romantic passion and courageous solidarity, three Polish families live out their destinies--and the drama of a nation.
Here are the Counts Lubonski, the petty nobles Bukowski, and peasants Buk--at times fiercely united, at other times tragically divided--whose common story finds its breathtaking culmination in the historic showdown between implacable Communists and rebellious farms in our present day.
"A Michener epic is far more than a bedtime reader, it's an experience. Poland is a monumental effort, a magnificent guide to a better understanding of the country's tribulations."
Chicago Tribune
A titanic documentary novel. . . I, for one, am delighted that Mr. Michener undertook two years of legwork and foraged through hundreds of musty chronicles to give me a total-immersion course in Poland."
The Wall Street Journal
