The Soccer War
Written by Ryszard Kapuscinski
Translated from the Polish by William R. Brand

Part diary and part reportage, The Soccer War is a remarkable chronicle of war in the late twentieth century. Between 1958 and 1980, working primarily for the Polish Press Agency, Kapuscinski covered twenty-seven revolutions and coups in Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East. Here, with characteristic cogency and emotional immediacy, he recounts the stories behind his official press dispatches--searing firsthand accounts of the frightening, grotesque, and comically absurd aspects of life during war. The Soccer War is a singular work of journalism.

"When our children's children want to study the cruelties of the late 20th century. . . they should read Ryszard Kapuscinski."
Wall Street Journal

"One of the great journalists of our time. . .Kapuscinski's journalistic encounters and his unexpected discoveries in the roughest parts of the world remain vivid."
Los Angeles Times

RYSZARD KAPUSCINSKI, Poland's most celebrated foreign correspondent, was born in 1932. After graduating with a degree in history from Warsaw University, he was sent to India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan to report for the Polish news, which began his lifelong fascination with the Third World. During four decades reporting on Asia, Latin America, and Africa, he befriended Che Guevara, Salvador Allende, and Patrice Lumumba. He witnessed twenty-seven coups and revolutions and was sentenced to death four times. His books have been translated into nineteen languages. He died in 2007.
