Jan Kochanowski is acknowledged to be the first great poet in Poland's vernacular literary tradition. "Laments" (1579) is a poignant series of poems representing the height of his achievement. They are an impassioned, yet impeccably controlled, expression of grief over the death of his daughter Orszula, and, while their power scandalized Kochanowski's contemporaries, they came at length to be considered an enduring masterpiece.	"Treny" (1579) zmarła córka Jana Kochanowskiego—Urszulka. Zaraz za nią zmarła kolejna córka—Hanna. Ukochanej córce Urszulce poeta poświęcił cykl Trenów. Kochanowski złamał zasady tworzenia trenów. Bohaterami trenów mogli być tylko osoby wysoko postawione. "Treny" poety opowiadają o trzyletniej córce. Właściwym bohaterem nie jest córka ale poeta zmagający się ze swoim cierpieniem po utracie córeczki. Zastanawia się dlaczego został tak skarany. Rozważa sens życia na ziemi. Wszystkie wartości filozoficzne autora zostały wystawione na próbę. "Treny" zapowiadały bliski zmierzch renesansu.
