The PharaohFaraon
Text: Bolesław Prus (1847-1912)Tekst: Bolesław Prus (1847-1912)
"Pharaoh," is the fourth and last major, and sole historical, novel by the Polish writer Bolesław Prus, regarded by many as one of Poland's greatest novelists. "Pharaoh" was written during the time when Poland did not exist as an independent country. After fighting when he was only 15 years old in the 1863 Polish Uprising, Prus altered these experiences and impressions on human societies into a unique novel on ancient politics. In preparation to writing the novel Prus absorbed himself in ancient Egyptian history, art, and writings. In the course of dictating his story of power and personality, Prus created perhaps the most compelling literary portrait of life in ancient Egypt.

The "Pharaoh" takes place in Egypt of 1087-1085 BCE as that country experiences internal stresses and external threats that will culminate in the fall of its XX Dynasty and New Kingdom. The protagonist Pharaoh Ramses XIII discovers that those who would challenge the powers are vulnerable to cooption, seduction, subornation, defamation, intimidation, and assassination. Perhaps the chief lesson finally learned by Pharaoh Ramses is the importance of knowledge.

Pisarz, poruszający w swoich utworach przede wszystkim aktualne tematy społeczne, w "Faraonie" sięgnął do modelu powieści historycznej, próbując zinterpretować sens przemian dziejowych.
