The Warsaw Mermaid has been the symbol of the city since the 15th century. The current statue, which was created by Konstanty Hegel in 1855, was recently returned to the Old Town square. During World War II, the zinc-cast statue disappeared, and legend has it that it was found in a scrap metal yard.
