The 1980 Olympic Games were most notable for the largest boycott of an Olympics event in history. Following the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in December 1979, the United States and 61 other countries decided to boycott the Olympics. Approximately 5,000 athletes participated, representing 81 countries.
