This historical Polish WWI Vintage Poster illustrates a charging Polish Hussar in the midst of battle. Below the image is the bilingual text "Śladami Ojców Naszych w Szeregach Armii Polskiej za Ojczyznę i Wolność - Following the paths of our Fathers in the ranks of the Polish Army for Motherland and Freedom." The World War I recruitment poster for the Polish Army was designed by artist Władysław Teodor "W.T." Benda (1873-1948) and published in c.1917 to encourage Polish-Americans to enlist in the Polish Army since America had not yet entered the war.
Between the 16th and 18th centuries, the charging Polish Hussars (Husaria) were a primary part of the Polish Army; first developed as a formation of light cavalry, then later transformed into heavy cavalry. They have been described as 'one of the most spectacular soldiers in the world'. Up until the 18th century, the Polish Hussars were notoriously the elite unit of the Commonwealth.
