"These translations are the fruits of an amateur's exploration of the riches of Polish literature, while attempting to learn the language and something about the Poles themselves. Many of the poems were brought to my attention by Polish friends, some more than half a century ago. My collection makes no claim to reflect the full scope and span of Poland's 600 year literary tradition. Many illustrious names are missing. To cite only a few: Zygmunt Krasinski (1812-1859), Cyprian Norwid (1821-1883), Czeslaw Milosz (born 1911), Wislawa Szymborska (born1923) and Zbigniew Herbert (1924-1998). In some cases, this is because good, sometimes excellent, English translations of their works already exist. On the other hand, some authors generally held to be of lesser merit, are included because I chanced upon their work and found it appealing."~Noel Clark
