It was in May 1917 in Fátima, Portugal that the Blessed Virgin Mary is believed to have appeared to three shepherd children and miraculously revealed a message of personal piety, repentance and prayer. According to the children's account of the Virgin's apparition, she confided to the children three secrets, now known as the "Three Secrets of Fátima". By June 1917 it was believed that the Virgin Mary promised a miracle for her last apparition to the children on October 13th so that all would believe. What transpired became known as "Miracle of the Sun" (O Milagre do Sol). On the foretold date after a downfall of rain, dark clouds broke and the sun appeared as an opaque, spinning disc in the sky casting multicolored lights across the landscape; this miraculous event was witnessed by 30,000 to 100,000 people. The event lasted approximately ten minutes and the three children also reported seeing a panorama of visions, including those of Jesus, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and of Saint Joseph blessing the people.
