Another Day of Life
Written by Ryszard Kapuściński
Translated from the Polish by William R. Brand & Katarzyna Mroczkowska-Brand

In 1975, Angola was tumbling into pandemonium; everyone who could was packing crates, desperate to abandon the beleaguered colony. With his trademark bravura, Ryszard Kapuściński went the other way, begging his was from Lisbon and comfort to Luanda--once famed as Africa's Rio de Janeiro--and chaos.

Angola, a slave colony later given over to mining and plantations, was a promised land for generations of poor Portuguese. It had belonged to Portugal since before there were English-speakers in North America. After the collapse of the fascist dictatorship in Portugal in 1974, Angola was brusquely cut loose, spurring the catastrophe of a still-ongoing civil war. Kapuściński plunged right into the middle of the drama, driving past thousands of haphazardly placed check-points, where using the wrong shibboleth was a matter of life and death; recording his impressions of the young soldiers--from Cuba, Angola, South Africa, Portugal--fighting a nebulous war with global repercussions; and examining the peculiar brutality of a country surprised and divided by its newfound freedom.

"Everything in Another Day of Life is alive--we see the beginning of the process by which a reporter's truth can, out of turmoil and fear, sometimes become an artist's."
The Village Voice

"In this unblinking picture of survival amid directionless chaos lies perhaps the elusive primitive clarification of what civil war is really like in the third world."
San Francisco Examiner

Over the years Ryszard Kapuściński was the laureate of many international literary prizes that brought recognition to his creative oeuvre. Most notibly in 2003 he was awarded one of Italy's most important literary prizes "The Premio Grinzane Cavour" in the international 'per la lettura' category (ie for the pleasure the reading of his books gives the reader). In 2006 he was awarded a special category of the "Ilaria Alpi Prize" for the entirety of his career (Premio Ilaria Alpi alla carriera), one of the best-known of Italian journalistic awards.

RYSZARD KAPUŚCIŃSKI, Poland's most celebrated foreign correspondent, was born in 1932. After graduating with a degree in history from Warsaw University, he was sent to India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan to report for the Polish news, which began his lifelong fascination with the Third World. During four decades reporting on Asia, Latin America, and Africa, he befriended Che Guevara, Salvador Allende, and Patrice Lumumba. He witnessed twenty-seven coups and revolutions and was sentenced to death four times. His books have been translated into nineteen languages. He died in 2007.
