POL-AM, a History of Polish Americans in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, 1862-1945
by Florence Waszkelewicz Clowes

In the nineteenth and twentieth century, Polish immigrants came to Pittsfield seeking work in the woolen mills. They settled in the north end of the city, creating social, religious, business organizations and brought the Holy Family Church to reality. Thirteen photos of dozens of people in various organizations and events are included.

Many served in World War I and World War II. The second and third generation continued to keep the traditions and customs of their parents while obtaining college degrees, establishing businesses and becoming professionals.

FLORENCE WASZKELEWICZ CLOWES, herself a second generation Pole, grew up in the Polish community of Pittsfield Massachusetts. She became interested in researching and recording the growth and development of the Polish immigrants in the area when she discovered there was no collective history. Clowes is widowed, the mother of five children and living in Vero Beach, Florida. She is Associate Editor and book review for The Polish-American Journal.
